IP Ratings
Understanding IP ratings is essential when selecting equipment or devices for specific environments where protection against dust, debris, or moisture is required to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Protection against solids
No protection against contact or ingress of objects.
Protection against solid objects larger than 50mm in diameter.
Protection against solid objects larger than 12.5mm in diameter.
Protection against solid objects larger than 2.5mm in diameter.
Protection against solid objects larger than 1mm in diameter.
Dust protected – limited ingress (no harmful deposit).
Dust-tight – complete protection against dust.
Protection against liquids
No protection against water.
Protection against vertically falling drops of water (dripping water).
Protection against vertically falling drops of water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15 degrees from its normal position.
Protection against spraying water at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical.
Protection against splashing water from any direction.
Protection against low-pressure jets of water from any direction.
Protection against powerful jets of water.
Protection against temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
Protection against continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer. For example, an IP65-rated device is dust-tight (first digit 6) and protected against low-pressure jets of water from any direction (second digit 5).
